A/N: I haven't forgotten, honest.
I had originally planned on finishing up the last chapter of TGND first, but who knows when that'll happen. And I'm not making any promises. But here's a little peace offering.
And once again, this chapter was co-written by the lovely remedychild. Before you start on me about updating any my other stories, I would like to point out that Luci is the author of the wonderful Probably . And that hasn't been updated in a looong time.
Just sayin'. ;D
Jackie fell face first onto the bed, sighing loudly as she buried her face in one of the many over-stuffed pillows. Seven job interviews in 13 days. She was exhausted, broke, running out of patience and fashionable business ensembles. Jackie Burkhardt's life was in shambles. She at least deserved to sleep in a comfortable bed.
Oh his bed. Again.
"Man, wake up! We've talked about this."
She grunted against the pillow but didn't bother opening her eyes.
Hyde shook his head and landed on the bed beside her, sticking a pillow under his head as he contemplated accidentally kicking her off. He chuckled to himself as he let his eyes close, planning on getting up to kick Jackie out for good after he rested a while.
FIVE HOURS LATER---
Jackie twisted in Hyde's arms, inching closer to his body, seeking his warmth. Their legs were entwined, expensive black heels atop scruffy brown boots, and they remained wrapped in each other's embrace.
Her stockings wrinkled under Hyde's foot as he stretched, moving even closer to her in his sleep. His breath tickled the hairs on her neck and she swung her arm back, her fingers landing on Hyde's wrist as his hand grasped her hip, her plaid skirt inching up further up her body as he continued to dig his nose between the pillow and her hair.
Hyde sleepily lifted his head from the pillow, but didn't bother to open his eyes, as Jackie's warm breath caressed his face.
"Jackie," he called her name softly, dream-like. He was so tired and felt so comfortable; he just couldn't find the will-power to actually try and wake up.
The sweet sound of her name combined with the light sensation of his breath on her ear made her fidget, and she swung her body around, his hand slipping away from her hip and down her thigh, finally waking her up.
"Mmm?" she answered, her own eyes still closed.
His hand went to her face, all on its own accord, and he was brushing her soft-skin tenderly as he continued to nap.
Eyes still closed, she sighed and automatically snuggled deeper in to his embrace as he reached for her in his sleep, moving his head in to kiss her. Her lips parted as he massaged his tongue with hers, still not fully awake as he moved in even closer. As other parts of his anatomy finally gained full attention, he opened his eyes.
"Jackie?" he half-screamed, pulling back so hard he slipped over the edge of the bed and fell to the floor, hard.
"Ooowww" he yelled, rubbing the back of his head that had just banged against the corner of the nightstand. "What the hell are you doing? Molesting me in my sleep?"
Jackie was wide awake now, her big eyes round with surprise. "Me molesting you? I was the one sleeping in here alone until you came in, trying to take advantage of me!"
Hyde staggered to his feet, groggy and aching. "It's my bed!"
"It's always about you, isn't it?" Jackie huffed, throwing her arms up in the air as she scrambled off the bed and out of the room.
Hyde stared after her in shock, his lips (and other areas) still tingling from the unexpected lip lock. Once he regained his composure, he stormed after her.
"Me? What about you? How many times have I told you? That's my bed. You're the guest. Therefore you sleep ON THE COUCH!"
"Wrong, Hyde," she answered stoically, plopping down on the couch. "Guests get the best accomodations available, and that's your bed!"
"Says who?" he asked in disbelief, absently rubbing the back of his injured head.
Jackie crinkled her brow in disgust, obviously put off by his lack of hosting etiquette. "Everyone!"
Hyde was enraged, his face bright red, hair mussed. "MY APARTMENT. MY ROOM. MY BED!" Jackie stared at him, her mouth hanging open in shock at his childish tantrum. Ignoring her, Hyde took a seat beside her on the couch and grabbed the remote. "THIS IS MINE!" he yelled, holding it in front of her. "MINE!"
He watched her expression closely, anticipating a lame comeback courtesy of Miss Manners. But Jackie just burst into tears instead.
Hyde stopped mid-yell and stared, dumbfounded at a crying Jackie, not sure what to do. Torn between running from the room and picking her up and cradling her in his arms, he just stood there.
Jackie sniffled and wiped at her eyes, "I'm sorry, Hyde." She licked her lips to continue and he forced his eyes up to meet hers as she went on.
"It's just...I had three interviews this morning. Three! And you would think just one would turn out okay but it didn't. It just didn't. First off, God, do you NEED experience in EVERYTHING? Who do these people think we are, anyway? And ugh, I spilled coffee all over the woman next to me in the waiting room, I mean, it didn't get on me thank God, but she was just screaming at me and...now YOU'RE screaming at me...it's just too much in one day.
"And you're right, everything here is yours and even if I am a guest...I have to respect that and suffer on the couch no matter how uncomfortable it is and how ungentlemanly you are for even expecting it."
She took another deep breath and wiped the last of her tears off her face. "I think I'm going about this all wrong. I'm too short to be a model, I'm too inexperienced to get any decent job, I'm just too incapable to even be on my own. Who was I kidding moving out here?" She tucked her hair behind her ear and sniffled one last time, ending her outburst, and slouched back in to her new "bed".
"Jackie, I..." Hyde trailed off, unsure of even what to say. "You...you can have the bed." He groaned inwardly, defeated.
"Really?" she asked, perking up.
Hyde rolled his eyes. "Yes."
"Oh, Steven, thank you! I mean it! Now I'll be well rested, and I won't have these hideous bags under my eyes," she told him, pointing to invisble dark circles. "Maybe I'll even get a job now! I have another interview tomorrow morning."
Hyde half-listened, eyeing the couch with distaste as she talked. Man, he loved his bed. It was so big and soft. But not too soft. And it had these really expensive sheets that he could just melt into. Damn, back home, he didn't even have sheets.
"-And the girl said that they normally only hire people with bachelor degrees in accounting. But I told her that I took business math in school, and I always balanced my checkbook-"
"Jackie," Hyde said, turning to her. "I've changed my mind about the bed."
"What? You can't do that?" she exclaimed, her voice high.
"Oh yes I can. And I just did. I love that bed too much to give it up now. Especially for this freaking hard-as-a-rock couch."
"But I'm supposed to sleep on the couch?" she asked, offended.
"You're a very little person. You don't need such a big bed. It's a complete waste of space," he replied, matter-of-factly.
Jackie was about to say something, but she stopped herself. Hyde cringed inwardly as he could see the wheels turning in her head.
"It is an awfully big bed..."
"No! Nuh uh. No way," he argued, his hands up on the defensive. "There is not a bed big enough in this world for me to sleep with you!"
"Didn't stop you earlier!" she retorted.
"I...I...you..." Hyde sputtered, flustered.
"I'll stick a bunch of pillows in between us so you're not tempted to kiss me again!" Jackie nodded encouragingly as Hyde's face turned red.
"I did NOT kiss you," he quickly retorted.
"Whatever, also, we won't be sharing the same comforter, I'll sleep on top and use a sheet and I don't move around a whole lot when I sleep, I swear." Jackie sat looking so desperate at him that he couldn't turn her down, especially when she didn't even realize her mascara had started to run when she was crying. No way in hell she would have let him look at her this long if she knew she had raccoon eyes.
"Ugh! Fine, just shut up already, okay?" Hyde said. "And I sleep on the right side and there will be no night lights on and the TV will be shut upon going to sleep, understand?"
"Yes." Her face was spread in to a big smile and he shook his head, still not believing that he actually agreed to this deranged arrangement.
Jackie yawned and stretched her arms over her head, the silky blouse she was wearing rose up and an inch of her tanned stomach exposed. She got up and threw her arms around him, muttering a "thank you" in his ear and heading off to the bathroom. A minute later a raspy scream sounded as the water turned on, he could hear her talking to herself about water proof mascara as he grinned and put the TV on.
Later that night as they got ready to go to sleep, Hyde stared at the bed for what seemed like an hour before he figured that he'd have to use almost all the pillows on the couch to separate himself and Jackie so he wouldn't sleep-make out with her again. When she emerged from the bathroom in an almost see-through night gown, he decided to use all the pillows and seriously considered using super glue to further secure the innocence of their arrangement. Jackie kicked off her slippers as she crawled on to her side, the gown inching up her legs as he bit down on his lip. Hard.
"Good night, Hyde!" Jackie smiled and closed her eyes, sinking in to his warm bed.
Good night, his ass, he thought.
